From Barcelona to Greece: A Recap of the Mediterranean Charter Shows

By Maggie Vale, Senior Charter Broker.

One of the responsibilities but also a perk of being a charter broker is traveling to charter yacht shows around the world to personally inspect the yachts and meet the crew. It’s the best way to know the product, in order to offer my clients the yachts that I know to be the best. There were over 150 yachts at the Mediterranean shows this year, representing all sizes and price ranges. These are yachts that charter in all areas of the West and East Mediterranean during the summer, and many that travel to the Caribbean and Bahamas for winter charters.

First up was the MYBA Charter Show which was held in Barcelona at OneOcean Port Vell Marina. With just over 70 yachts in attendance, there were favorites in various sizes. One of mine was MIMI LA SARDINE, a 111’ Cantiere Delle Marche built in 2019. As winner of the Best Interior Design award presented by Boat International, she was then entered in the prestigious World Superyacht Awards. The judges unanimously voted her winner of the category ‘Displacement Yacht below 299GT’ because of her distinctive interior with a beach house style that makes use of a wide range of organic materials. Her feel is elegant yet comfortable, a beautiful yacht for every client’s taste.

Another favorite at MYBA Charter Show was SAMADHI, a wonderful 60’ Catamaran built in 2018 by Sunreef Yachts. Her interior is crisp and clean with four double cabins. The exterior deck has dining, trampoline bow, and the great flybridge for relaxing while underway.

From Barcelona it was off to beautiful Nafplio, Greece for the East Med Yacht Show. There were almost 100 yachts represented there, from Catamarans to the newly launched 278’ O’PTASIA by Golden Yachts. A show stopper in Nafplio was SOURAYA, a 124’ Sanlorenzo with five staterooms, a deck jacuzzi and plenty of water toys. Beautiful inside and out, she is a perfect yacht for charter. Another favorite is ZALIV III.  At 162’ she has it all: six staterooms, a spa, a large office connected to the master stateroom and a top crew. Greece and the islands of the Aegean and Ionian Seas are very popular charter destinations with their ancient history and incredible beauty. There is a charter yacht to suit any client’s taste and budget here, and there is no better way to discover this fabulously rich and interesting part of the world.

Hydra, Greece

After the Greece show, I was fortunate to cruise in the Aegean on a 131’ motor yacht to a few of the islands for a personal taste of a Greek charter itinerary and how the charter client would experience this culture, food and people. Our stops included Hydra (a car-less island with wonderful walks…or ride a donkey to the top), the ruins of Epidaurus, the birthplace of modern medicine in the 6th Century BC, and numerous alluring and peaceful coves where we anchored for swimming, water toys and a delicious lunch prepared by the yacht’s chef. On the last day, we cruised the sparkling Aegean Sea to Athens and the bustling marina of Flisvos and enjoyed a night out in the capital city. Most charters go off in July and August, but to really appreciate the special flavor of Greece and a less hectic time, go in September or October when the Seas are the warmest and the crowds are gone!

Few of life’s pleasures compare with a yacht charter because it blends an incredible sense of privacy with the freedom and flexibility to do exactly as you please. Traveling by private yacht along any coast is an unforgettable experience……let me show you how!
