A Virgin Islands yacht charter to St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas, the western group of islands, comprise a visit to US territories along with many smaller islands, islets, cays, and atolls. The British control the eastern islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke, as well as 60 other smaller islands and cays.
Although the territories are politically separate, like many Caribbean islands, they maintain close cultural ties. Origins of West African, European and American influences over the years have formed a syncretic culture that shares commonalities of friendly, gracious, and accommodating hosts to visitors from around the globe.
The Virgin Islands lie east of Puerto Rico and separate the Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean Sea. The subtropical average temperatures of 70 to 85°F. make the climate ideal for year round yacht charters. The dominant language is English and the currency is the US dollar.
American visitors to the US islands can feel at home with the currency, language and legalities of the territory, yet enjoy the esoteric culture of the Caribbean with its unique blend of music, cuisine, art, and local dialects on a Virgin Islands yacht charter.
According to the 2000 census, language in the US Virgin Islands is: English 74.7%, Spanish or Spanish Creole 16.8%, French or French Creole 6.6%, other 1.9%.
No visa is required for citizens of the U.S. or Canada in the US Virgin Islands. U.S. citizens must show proof of identity (driver’s license or proof of citizenship), and Canadians must have a valid passport to enter the country.
In the BVI, US citizens must present a passport or other WHTI-compliant documentation to enter or depart the United States.
Throughout the US and British Virgin Islands, the US dollar is the accepted currency, which is another convenience for American visitors.
English is the official language of the BVI, with a secondary language of Spanish.
Peaceful anchorages in private coves, Mother Nature displaying her Sunday best in stunning tropical rain forests, and exciting nightlife in modern urban settings are all available for the asking in this picturesque corner of paradise on a Virgin Islands yacht charter. It’s little wonder that the islands were the perfect setting for privateers and oft time pirates Sir Francis Drake and Jost Van Dyke to establish headquarters and lure vessels they wanted to plunder.
